Job Summary:

We are seeking a creative data scientist for a role on our computational team to help develop a novel platform for the discovery of drug targets. Our computational engine combines rigorous mathematical and statistical analysis with sophisticated software development strategies. The platform integrates formal bioinformatics knowledge with ever-expanding datasets from genomics, single-cell biology, stem cells and neuroscience, to enable the rational identification of novel drugs. Candidates for this role should have a track record of developing or improving state-of-the-art computational methods, ideally paired with experience engineering object-oriented software. In addition, successful candidates must be able to work effectively both in a collaborative setting and independently, and must possess outstanding written, visual and oral communications skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Critically assess current state-of-the-art computational methods in the literature on bioinformatics, statistics, mathematics, artificial intelligence, and computer science
  • Work closely with our experimental scientists to devise novel machine learning algorithms, or apply pre-existing methods, for the analysis of large, very high-dimensional datasets
  • Use ontology engineering to build software that combines experimental data with existing bioinformatics knowledge, to construct rich models of biological function from incomplete data
  • Participate in code reviews (as both reviewer and author); software deployment and maintenance; iteration planning and timeline estimation; and software design discussions

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

You must have:

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Mathematics, or the Biological or Physical Sciences
  • Creativity and original thinking are paramount
  • >5 years of programming experience in object-oriented (e.g., C++ or Java) and/or mathematical languages (e.g., MATLAB, Mathematica, or R)
  • Commitment to rigor, in both quantitative analysis and software development
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (the role requires collaboration with both experimental and computational scientists)

Additional bonus qualifications (useful but not requisite):

  • A strong background in machine learning or artificial intelligence
  • Biological knowledge or experience working with biological datasets
  • Experience working with relational database systems
  • Familiarity with Unix/Linux operating systems, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and/or Git version control
